It’s difficult to say precisely when Reggae, ska, Bluebeat records started to be played in the clubs of Manchester. Certainly Lord Kitchener was played at the Brazenose Street Twisted Wheel but that is more likely to be classified as ‘Calypso’.
In the mid sixties Prince Buster was played regularly at the Wheel and some of us made a trip down to Stafford Polytechnic to watch him perform, minus train tickets I might add, which produced it’s own problems…
