Something Inside Me

It’s Ray Charles’ Soul songs that we are primarily interested in this catalogue but of course he was a great innovator and originator in many types of music. Big Ray Charles’ tracks at the Blue Note included I Chose To Sing The Blues and  Don’t Need No Doctor. Ray Charles and the Raelettes Tell The Truth from the LP Live In Atlanta and also featured on Ray Charles At Newport was a number that I often heard Roger Eagle playing as the Twisted Wheel opened up during week day evening sessions. He loved Ray Charles.

What can be said about blind ‘Brother Ray’ that has not been said before? Even though he is regarded as a Country, A Pop singer, a Jazz artist, and everything in between, he started out with blues and soul music. One of our favourite performances was in the Blues Brothers film where he sang Shake A Tail Feather.

“Georgia” is the State Of Georgia’s State Song and the record in a glass case is on display in the Senate House in Atlanta. I named my daughter after this song – written by Hoagy Carmichael.

I Don’t Need No Doctor – was written for Ray by Nick Ashford.
