Surfer and Dragster sounds were quite popular in the early and mid 1960’s, epitomised by the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, and instrumentalists like the Surfaris and the Venturers.
Ronnie & The Daytonas were played sometimes at the Twisted Wheel. But I once heard Roger Eagle tell someone requesting Bucket T (Dave Lomas later to be a DJ at The Blue Note) to piss off – he wasn’t playing anymore Dragster crap.
However, it still got played a few days later when Roger had cooled off, as lots of dancers liked it and often sang out the lyrics.
