Your Gonna Pay

The Rivingtons – From “Papa – Oom – Mow – Mow” to the “Surfin Bird” then on to the somewhat great “Your Gonna Pay” The Rivingtons surf type stuff got played at the Wheel. The Trashmen mixed both these tracks together for the head banging Surfin Bird. The group had many many names see this: Soulfulkindamusic.

At the Blue Note club in Manchester in 1968 when DL – Dave Lomas became one of the club DJays he would play The Rivingtons and The Trashmen. He used to request these 45’s to be played at the Twisted Wheel, but Roger Eagle the DJ did get fed up with them especially the “Surfin Bird” by the Trashmen – driving everyone crazy; and he told DL to go and try and have sex with himself, but he said it shorter than that. Roger thought it would no longer go down well with the dancers. Well that’s just what happened when DL played these at the Blue Note; he always cleared the dance-floor with the exception being the one you could dance too: “Your Gonna Pay” which is quit an excellent Soul recording.

Dave got his liking for the Rivingtons and the Trashmen by frequently going to Dragster car racing at Santa Pod UK.

Of course this little story is no reflection on The Rivingtons and their music which was of course quit unique and brilliant.

Jan And Dean

Jan and Dean Live - Little Old Lady from Pasadena .

Jan and Dean – SURF CITY
DEAD MANS CURVE
The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)

Only the Beach Boys came near to the ‘surf feel’ for that California sound that epitomised Jan and Dean. Brian Wilson sang backup vocals on their biggest hit (which he co-wrote with Jan) ‘Surf City,’ in 1963. Jan & Dean’s hits ‘The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena),’ ‘Drag City,’ ‘Honolulu Lulu,’ and ‘Dead Man’s Curve’ –  a weird prescient tale that came true when Jan Berry had a near-fatal car crash in April 1966. They started in 1958 and disbanded in April 1966 but not before doing a few Batman related tracks.

Their tracks like other Surf and Dragster stuff was played at the Twisted Wheel in Brazennose Street in Manchester.. “I got a 34 Wagon and I Call it a Woody” . Surf City Here I Come.People even dyed their hair blond, and skate boards and surfing took off at UK Holiday resorts like St Ives and Newquay. yer’ Mods would go their and come back to London or Manchester clubs demanding more surf stuff to be played, until in the case of the Manchester Wheel Roger Eagle the DJ began to refuse to play it.

The Hondells

Hondells "Little Honda"

Little Honda – Mercury 1964

A lot of surf, hot rod and dragster related music was played at the old Twisted Wheel. Examples were: “Little Honda” by the Hondells, GTO by Ronnie and The Daytoners, Bucket T, Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys did lots of similar stuff. In fact it was Brian Wilson that wrote Little Honda for the Hondells. Roger Eagle the Club’s DJ would run hot and cold on this music style. Always a fan of the Beach Boys, sometimes he would refuse to play requests for some of the others, such as the Surfin’ Bird which he detested.

Producer Gary Usher put together session men to record the track and great ones too – featured ace guitarists Glen Campbell and Richie Podolor, as well as drummer Hal Blaine.

Song Lyrics:  LITTLE HONDA – The Hondells

I’m gonna wake you up early
Cause I’m gonna take a ride with you
We’re going down to the Honda shop
I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do
Put on a ragged sweatshirt
I’ll take you anywhere you want me to

First gear (Honda Honda) it’s alright (faster faster)
Second gear (little Honda Honda) I lean right (faster faster)
Third gear (Honda Honda) hang on tight (faster faster)
Faster it’s alright

It’s not a big motorcycle
Just a groovy little motorbike
It’s more fun that a barrel of monkeys
That two wheel bike
We’ll ride on out of the town
To any place I know you like

First gear (Honda Honda) it’s alright (faster faster)
Second gear (little Honda Honda) I lean right (faster faster)
Third gear (Honda Honda) hang on tight (faster faster)
Faster it’s alright

It climbs the hills like a matchless
Cause my Honda’s built really light
When I go into the turns
Lean [Tilt] with me and hang on tight
I better turn on the lights
So we can ride my Honda tonight

First gear (Honda Honda) it’s alright (faster faster)
Second gear (little Honda Honda) I lean right (faster faster)
Third gear (Honda Honda) hang on tight (faster faster)
Faster it’s alright

First gear (Honda Honda) it’s alright (faster faster)
Second gear (little Honda Honda) I lean right (faster faster)
Third gear (Honda Honda) hang on tight (faster faster)
Faster it’s alright

Stick Shift – London 1961

The Duels released Stick Shift a popular Surfer / Dragster instrumental in 1961. The term ‘stick shift’ refers to the manual gearbox preferred in European cars almost exclusively at the time whereas in the US virtually all cars are automatic.

Ronnie & The Daytonas - 'Little GTO'

Little G.T.O.
BUCKET T

Surfer and Dragster sounds were quite popular in the early and mid 1960’s, epitomised by the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, and instrumentalists like the Surfaris and the Venturers.

Ronnie & The Daytonas were played sometimes at the Twisted Wheel. But I once heard Roger Eagle tell someone requesting Bucket T (Dave Lomas later to be a DJ at The Blue Note) to piss off – he wasn’t playing anymore Dragster crap.

However, it still got played a few days later when Roger had cooled off, as lots of dancers liked it and often sang out the lyrics.

Little GTO – Song lyrics – Ronnie and The Daytonas

Little GTO, you’re really lookin’ fine
Three deuces and a four-speed and a 389
Listen to her tachin’ up now, listen to her why-ee-eye-ine
C’mon and turn it on, wind it up, blow it out GTO

Wa-wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa
Wa-wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa
( ‘Yeah, yeah, little GTO’ background)
Wa-wa wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa

You oughta see her on a road course or a quarter mile
This little modified Pon-Pon has got plenty of style
She beats the gassers and the rail jobs, really drives ’em why-ee-eye-ild
C’mon and turn it on, wind it up, blow it out GTO

Gonna save all my money, turnin’ it on, blowin’ it out, and buy a GTO
turnin’ it on, blowin’ it out..
Get a helmet and a roll bar
