Cannonball Adderley released Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, an excellent instrumental covered by Georgie Fame and also Larry Williams and Johnny Guitar Watson. The original was by Marlena Shaw on Chess but the instrumental version by Cannonball Adderley was also very popular at the early Manchester soul venues.

1955 – visited  New York and was persuaded to jam with Oscar Pettiford’s group at the Cafe Bohemia. The Savoy label signed him and his younger brother cornet player Nat, Cannonball joined him in New York.
1957 he joined Miles Davis, sextet with John Coltrane
1959 with pianist Bobby Timmons recorded This Here.

1959-63 at the Riverside Studios, the Adderley Quintet were joined by Yusef Lateef and pianist Joe Zawinul.

1966 Mercy, Mercy, Mercy became a major hit for the group.
