P. J. Proby is a colourful character who is mainly remembered for splitting his velvet trousers onstage which kept the tabloids in headlines for quite some time. Whenever his name in in the news (and it has been, often) out come the cliches regarding the oh so shocking events that took place one night in the sixties.

Anyway, the track Niki Hoeky has become a Northern Soul item. It was played at Manchester’s Twisted Wheel club way back in the mid sixties.

P. J. Proby has had what can only be described as a checkered career, and has had many disputes with management over the years. He was due to appear in a 20 date farewell tour in 2019 but, due to some unwise comments he made, this was eventually cancelled.

At one point he lived in Prestwich, Manchester, where his imposing figure could often been seen walking down Bury New Road wearing a Stetson hat and cowboy boots. As both Nico and John Cooper Clarke lived in the same locale, he hardly caused much of a stir. Without doubt, one of those characters that add a bit of colour to an otherwise dull world. Long may he continue
