A major country singer in a Soul database! Are we mad? Well, in fact Charlie Rich made two all time Soul stunners in the early 1960’s and “Don’t Tear Me Down” was close behind, before going behind Country and Western closed doors (closed doors to Soul that is).
For a White guy at the time he was an exceptional Soul singer. We loved Love Is After Me with a passion – it’s still a great record. No wonder. It was written by Hayes and Porter.
These two tracks were major had to play tracks for the DJ’s at the 1960s soul clubs in Manchester, especially The Twisted Wheel.
A great soul performer – his latest releases have gone back to his pre Country and Western hits – ‘Pictures And Paintings’ is a soulful track.
