Sandie Shaw always appeared on TV singing in bare feet. Her real name was Sandra Goodrich from Dagenham and she was discovered by Adam Faith.
Her first success was “(There’s) Always Something There To Remind Me” and it was played at the Twisted Wheel, it was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick. Both versions made the pop charts in the UK but Sandie reached number one. Dionne’s was the preferred version at the Brazennose Street Twisted Wheel as it was the original but it was no surprise that the real favourite was the Lou Johnson version.
Girl Don’t Come was another record by Sandie that got a couple of plays at the Wheel in those early days before Blues and soul took over entirely from pop. Sure, she was a nice girl but always came over as a bit odd when interviewed (still does – the expression ‘box of frogs’ springs to mind).
