Okeh Records were founded in the US in 1918. It was later owned by Columbia Records. It became moribund before being revived in the fifties.

Carl Davis produced most of the OKEH hits with Curtis Mayfield writing quite a lot of them.

Artists who recorded for Okey Records included:

The Vibrations

Walter Jackson

Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson

Larry Williams

the Opals

The ‘Monkey Time’ just about summed up the Manchester soul scene in the mid to late sixties – it was always on the Twisted Wheel Allnighter play list, and its lyrics seemed to capture what the ‘Wheel’ was like;
There’s a place right across town. whenever your ready’.
