For Soul purists Lipps Inc are popularized disco soul, and this is therefore referred to by the Soul aficionados as a trashy disco soul. But nevertheless it’s sort of OK. The group was going to be called Lip Sync originally, until it turned out someone else was using the name. Later on they had a hit with How Long, a cover of an earlier release by British group Ace.
Their biggest hit and the one which still gets many plays today, is Funkytown with its insidious, ear worm organ intro, once heard, never forgotten. This was the background music for Bryan Cranston’s immortal disco roller exhibition for his sons in the irreplaceable Malcolm In The Middle tv series – just watch it!
