On A Magic Carpet Ride (1966)

Kiki Dee (Pauline Matthews a Bradford Lass!) obviously liked Soul music. she recorded a version of Tammi Lynne‘s: I’m Gonna Run Away From You, did a version of Nancy Wilson‘s How Glad I Am in 1964 and eventually signed to Motown releasing The Day Will Come.

But back in 1966 Small Town (Fontana) 1966 and On A Magic Carpet Ride were quite good and did get a bit of an airing at Manchester soul clubs at that time. Kiki went to the USA, apparently to do a duet with Marvin Gaye, but that didn’t happen. She did record at Motown but not with a great deal of  impact.

“On A Magic Carpet Ride” was recorded by Derek Martin on and LP, it was originally written by Teddy Randazzo for Little Anthony (and the Imperials) but never released.

Next resurfaced duetting with Elton John – Don’t Go Breaking My Heart and still looking remarkably young. Has she? Don’t ask me but she was born on 6th March 1947!

Oh, and she also starred in Blood Brothers in the West End where she was nominated for an Olivier award.
