The Delfonics began in 1965 in Philadelphia and were probably, along with The Intruders, one of the first soul groups to sing in their slow polished soulful style. This sound was very popular at the Blue Note Club in Manchester but not so much at the Twisted Wheel which favoured the Motown rhythm style up-tempo dance numbers, especially for the Saturday night Allnighters.
The Delfonics were a vocal trio with brothers William and Wilbert Hart and school friend Randy Cain, their producer was Thom Bell and he was probably responsible for the “Philadelphia sound.” I think that Major Harris was a one time member.
Doo wop singing at school dances was how they started out. Eventually they were signed to local record label Cameo Parkway.
In 1968 Thom Bell signed them to his Phlly Groove Label and they released La La Means I Love You. They had three successive hits before disbanding in 1974.
In 1998 Quentin Tarantino’s film Jackie Brown used La La Means I Love You, and Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time) in the soundtrack and even has the actor go and buy the Delfonics Greatest Hits cassette. Tarantiino’s choice of music is always good, sometimes brilliant.
