She was from Leeds and did covers of USA Pop tracks. Didn’t everyone in the UK at that time do this:?YES but Christine Quaite covered mainly early sixties pop. No doubt annoyingly to her, she became known as the ‘new Helen Shapiro‘!
Christine Quaite was an English girl singer very much in the mould of Helen Shapiro being young, Jewish and having a powerful voice. Sounds familiar? She also gained her first success at the age of thirteen when she came second in a talent contest that won her a recording contract with Oriole Records. Amy Winehouse was actually following in a long tradition of Jewish girls with deep soulful voices. Apparently, after Oriole went bust, she gave up the business and got married.

She was managed by Bunny Lewis, not to be confused with that other Bunny Lewis the female impersonator and impresario well known on the gay pub scene in the fifties and sixties in Manchester.
Her version of Jimmy Radcliffe’s great song Long After Tonight Is All Over has become a Northern Soul collector’s item.
