The Chantays

The Chantays - Pipeline

PIPELINE –  1963 Dot Record label

The Chantays were a USA surf based group formed at the Californian Santa Ana High School. the line up was: Bob Spickard (lead guitar), Brian Carman (guitar, saxophone), Bob Marshall (piano), Warren Waters (bass) and Bob Welsh (drums). They formed the Chantays in 1962 and Pipeline followed in 1963.

The early Beat clubs in Manchester played this, the Twisted Wheel played it frequently and even in the mid to late 1960s Pipeline would rattle out at the city’s soul clubs where Surf music was occasionally tolerated. This is another oldie that still gets a lot of air time, particularly when any surfing scene appears on television.

Pipeline refers to surfing within the pipe of a curling wave.
