Brenda Vaughn released a great track called Sistas Shakin Up and t she seems to have been a big hit in Tokyo. She was born in Starkville, Mississippi and even had a day name after her!
Quirky song French MOD sixties. Vanessa Paradis had her first success at 14 with Joe Le Taxi which brought her worldwide fame. She is also an actress, very French…

Johnnie Mae Matthews – a respected name in soul and blues music. Curious name Johnnie for a woman, but she was heralded the “Godmother of Detroit Soul”. A big influence of many artists in the city who later signed to Motown.
We think the ‘B’ side of I have No Choice is even better – sung by her daughter Audrey Matthews.

We all know Macy Gray’s distinctive singing style. This is a beautiful soulful ballad. Her real name is Natalie Renee McIntyre. So far she’s released 10 albums and is talented in many directions including songwriting, acting and producing. The instrumentation on this track is reminiscent of Buffalo Springfield (For What It’s Worth). Just fabulous.
Corinne Bailey Rae is a Sweet Soul singer and song writer from Leeds, Yorkshire, England. She graduated from Leeds University in 2000, and her debut album was Corinne. She has a wonderful, almost child like voice that can affect even the most hardened cynics among us. Long may she continue to sing and play.
Her first album, Corinne Bailey Rae, went straight to number one in the album charts, only the fourth British female star to do so.

Soulvation Army Band released Dancing On A Daydream as an instrumental on the A side and sung by Flora Wilson on the B side. The same track both as a song and instrumental has been done many times before of course – how about You Can’t Sit Down, instrumental by Phil Upchurch and the song by The Dovells. This track is a bit reminiscent of Archie Bell in its rhythm if nothing else.
Su Kramer is another of those wonderful things, a German black soul singer. However, the song You Got The Power feels like it owes more to ABBA than Aretha! No wonder it’s popular in Europe…
