Agatha Natalie Weston was born in Detroit on the 30th of December 1939. Kim Weston is better known for her duet work with Marvin Gaye (It Takes Two, a 1966 hit, is the classic example) than her solo recordings like (Gladys Knight’s Take Me In Your Arms).

Helpless is my own all time Motown favourite and arguably the best female soul record ever. It rocked the dance floors at all the soul clubs in Manchester in the latter half of the sixties decade and can be counted as a track that was one of those that epitomized the Northern Soul sound. It was one of those tracks played at the Twisted Wheel where you were speared in the heart and just had to get up and dance with joy.

Here is another good sound from Kim: After The Rain

1967 Kim Weston left Motown and recorded for MGM, Volt, and more recently for Ian Levine‘s MotorCity label in 1989.

See and hear Kim on The Strange World Of Northern Soul DVD.

Never officially released, one fantastic recording YOU HIT ME (RIGHT WHERE IT HURT ME) was a Northern Soul hit for Alice Clark.

Song Lyrics – Helpless – Kim Weston – written by Holland, Dozier, Holland

Every day I walk some lonely street
Searching for you till you come back to me
People around stop and stare
As if they know the hurt I bear
Suddenly I realize I’m cryin’, cryin’, cryin’

‘Cause I’m in a helpless situation
And I need some consolation
‘Cause my mind is in confusion
And my heart feels much abusion
Since you’ve been gone, keeps me cryin’, cryin’, cryin’

In the shelter of your love, my strength I found
But now I’m useless, baby, since you’re not around
I’m helpless, baby

Ooh, wee, baby, baby
I’m helpless since I lost your love
Helpless ’cause now I need your love
I never needed no one before
But now I need you more and more
Since you’ve been gone, keeps me cryin’, cryin’, cryin’

‘Cause I’m helpless till you come back to me
Helpless in this world I grieve
I need your words of comfort and
I need those happy times we spent
I’m in a hopeless state of confusion
And your love is the only solution

‘Cause I’m in a helpless situation
And I need some consolation
‘Cause my mind is in confusion
Till I’m havin’ strange illusions
Loneliness deep inside keeps me cryin’, cryin’, cryin’

‘Cause I’m in a helpless situation
And I need some consolation
‘Cause my mind is in confusion
Till I’m havin’ strange illusions
Loneliness deep inside keeps me cryin’, cryin’, cryin’

Kev Roberts puts Helpless in his Top 500 at position 453. And says “If it was on a small label with only two or three copies it would command a five thousand £pound price”.

Hmm: So it shows that the actual quality and performance of the content of the record is secondary to the rarity of the vinyl label. To our mind this sums up much of the driving forces behind DJs and collectors  – the music performance being sometimes a secondary consideration..

On our scene and in my own opinion Helpless is our NUMBER ONE all time Soul Classic.
