Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band

Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band; simply a MASSIVE act at the old and the new Twisted Wheel in the sixties, live or on record. They were a superb live act at the Wheel and were a mod band with a black singer – the perfect combination for an allnighter live session.

Geno Washington, in common with several others at the time, was a U.S. airman, based in the U.K. He would often get up on the stage at London clubs and give a performance of his singing talents. It became somewhat of a status symbol to have a black American in a British band and he took over The Ram Jam Band. They had a great sound, as can be heard on one of our favourite tracks at the Wheel, Water. There is something about that sax and organ intro and underlying rhythm that just made it fit in perfectly with the Mod sound at the time.

Dexy’s Midnight Runners did a tribute track called Geno which in itself, is a really good song.
