The Chiffons - One Fine Day - 1963
The Chiffons were formed in 1960 in The Bronx, with lead singer Judy Craig as well as Sylvia Peterson, Barbara Lee, and Patricia Bennett. High school classmates, their first minor hit was Tonight’s the Night.
IN 1963 He’s So Fine was released on the Laurie label and became number one on both the R & B and pop charts. One Fine Day was originally written by Carol King for Little Eva. A Love So Fine followed later in 1963. They also recorded as the Four Pennies on the Rust label and had some minor hits with such songs as My Block and When The Boy’s Happy The Girl’s Happy Too in 1963.
In 1965 they released Sweet Talkin’ Guy. This was their biggest track as far as the Manchester soul scene was concerned. One Fine Day was also popular.
In 1971 George Harrison recorded My Sweet Lord. The publishers of the Chiffons’ He’s So Fine claimed that My Sweet Lord was simply the same song written with different lyrics. George Harrison lost lawsuit. God knows why – they are not the same. To rub it in the Chifffons recorded My Sweet Lord! The episode led to a reissue of the Chiffons’ Sweet Talkin’ Guy in the UK in 1972 and ironically due to the publicity it became their biggest UK hit, reaching number four.
These days virtually everything you hear is a rip off of someone else’s material. Bo Diddley was one of the first to complain about it and was ignored. Rappers copy James Brown and just about everything else and nobody apparently gets sued. Poor George! I think the judge must have been a Rolling Stones Fan.
